ALPS Mountaineering Low Rocker Chair is a folding steel chair with solid armrests and a nice carry bag suitable for a variety of outdoor activities.
Key features
- Rocking chair.
- Solid & padded armrests.
- Folding and collapsible type.
- Carry bag included.
- Low seat.
What type of a camping chair is this
Obviously, this is a rocker chair and I have included it in my list of rocking chairs. This is also a folding and collapsible chair with two small pins on the back, shown in the picture below, which you pull when you want to close the chair. So this is the only disassembly step you have here.
When packed it remains large in one dimension only as you see from the picture below.
So folded it fits its carry bag (the picture below) with the shoulder strap so you can carry it shorter distances. This is useful also to stuff it at home and keep clean from dust.
The picture below shows the chair from the back, so you realize that the bigger part is mesh. The X-shaped bars on the back provide a great lateral stability. The armrests are padded and angled forward; with such a design it remains narrow when packed. The packed dimensions are (L x D) 34 x 10 inches (86 x 25 cm).
Such arm support is not perfect but this helps when you get in and out of the chair, the chair is low as the name suggests, the seat is at 15 inches (38 cm) above the ground.
Who is it for
The capacity is normal for such a type, the chair supports up to 300 lb (136 kg). You will see it compared with some other similar chairs in the comparison table below.
The weight is also quite typical, it weighs 11 lb (5 kg), so this is not an item to carry long distances, but this is possible, you have seen its carry bag.
The dimensions are in the range of its competitors, it is just a bit lower than some other chairs out there. But this is a part of its design.
So all in all, you need a car for transportation. You can use this chair on any terrain, it will not sink if the ground is soft because of the rocking bars, but it will not rock either. So to use it as a rocker, you need a solid ground.
Note that the GCI Freestyle Rocking Chair works on a different principle and it will rock anywhere. The same holds for the Nemo Stargaze Luxury Chair which is also a totally unique construction.
The materials & brand
This is a solid Pro-Tec powder-coated steel chair, designed to last, and the seat is what they call the TechMesh fabric, breathable and very suitable for summer camping. The padding on the armrests is a soft foam.
ALPS Mountaineering is a part of Alps Brands, it started in 1993, and they are known for their durable, high-performance products that are usually with very reasonable price tags.
There are several other chairs from this brand here in the site, like this Rocker Chair which is a higher cousin of the chair presented here and with a great headrest. Also this Escape Chair with its footrests, and the biggest of them the King Kong chair with its incredible capacity of 800 lb (363 kg).

ALPS Mountaineering Low Rocker Chair vs Competitors
As mentioned above, this chair is quite typical and you will realize this from the parameters shown in the table below. But note that it is collapsible so its packed size is better than in the case of the Kamp-Rite chair which is a folding type. Those are all very affordable chairs, so follow the links to check for updates.

Final thoughts
So this ALPS Mountaineering Low Rocker Chair is really nicely built, in the best tradition of this reliable brand. The price is more than fair, and the carry bag is very useful. But if you are a very tall person perhaps you might rather choose its higher cousin the ALPS Mountaineering Rocking Chair.
