What type is it

The Kamp-Rite Oversize Kwik Cot is in the group of folding cots. This means it packs to a small size with only one relatively large dimension, 41 x 7 x 8 in (104 x 18 x 20 cm), see the picture.

But this is one of those cots which do not require any assembly or setup; you simply spread it like an umbrella and it is ready in seconds.

With the weight of 23 lbs (10.4 kg) this cot is portable to short distances, but not one of those you would carry in the backpack.

Who is it for

Its name suggests its great size and capacity, so indeed I have included it in the group of cots for heavy people. This is a huge cot with the bed size 84 x 33 in (213 x 84 cm) and the capacity 350 lbs (159 kg).

As you have seen above, it is relatively heavy so if you use it outdoors, then this will be at places with a car access only. So these can be regular camping places, summer camps, trailhead hotels, open-air festivities (concerts and any gatherings).

For home use, this is a great spare bed for sudden guests, easy to deploy and to fold away, just store it in the closet or in the attic and use in the emergency situation of any kind. It is easy to use and anybody can make it ready.

The bed is so wide so it is suitable for any kind of sleepers, if you are a side sleeper do not worry, you have plenty of space.

Description

Everything in this cot is heavy-duty, this is a stable construction which does not move when you turn on the bed, it does not make unpleasant noise, and there is no smell of any kind when it is delivered.

The bed canvas is a heavy-duty 600D fabric, it is very supportive and with very little give in. You will notice its side storage pockets for personal items (shown above), really useful to stay organized during the night in a camp or wherever you use it.

The cot comes complete with a convenient Carry Bag for easy transporting and to avoid dust when you store it for a long period at home.

There are no bars under the canvas, so no pressure points of any kind. The construction is also without end-bars, so the whole length of the bed is a truly useful space, this is not always so with such big cots, see in the comparison table below.

Note also that there are no any metal surfaces to touch when you are on the bed, everything is nicely covered by the fabric, even the joint places in the middle on the sides have some extra flaps, see the picture.

Using it in a tent

The Kamp-Rite Oversize Cot is a huge tool, very long and very tall as well, so not every tent will be suitable to accommodate it. Ideally, for a solo use you should try to find a suitable high enough 2-person tent.

The cot will surely occupy a lot of space in any tent, but bear in mind that you have a huge space under the cot to store all your gear. This is not so when you sleep on a pad on the ground.

Here a few great tents that are ideal for cots of this type: Kelty Camp Cabin 4 and Camp Cabin 6, and Kelty Mirada Tent.  Also, the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 tent is large enough to accommodate this cot if used solo.

Note that you can use it with a tarp as well, so this Kelty Mirada Tarp looks like a great option.

The legs are with plastic protection and there are 6 of them, so the weight is distributed but you might consider adding some extra protection for the tent floor if the surface under the tent is soft. For home use, no issues of any kind regarding the floor.

How about insulation

In cold conditions, you will need some insulated pad. But since you are far off the ground and air is under you, you need far less insulation. This is because air takes around 50 times less body warmth than the ground.

My rating, pros & cons

My list of pros is obviously long and I do not find any true objection to this cot. The only thing is perhaps its height which limits its use in ordinary tents that are normally rather low.
