Helinox Cot One V2 – description
This is an upgraded version of the very popular Helinox Cot One camping tool, hence V2 in the name. Note that there are several models of the same brand described in this site like Cot Max, High Cot, and Cot Lite. They all are rather similar with respect to construction and setup procedure, but there are differences in weight and size.
Common for all of them is an easy setup without any extra tool, so the same is with this Cot One V2. There are just a few components here:
- two sets of poles with shock cord inside,
- the fabric,
- three sets of legs.
The poles interconnect like tent poles, and you cannot lose any of them because of the cord. The same is with legs, and bars that connect them, you also have a shock cord inside each of them. On one side of the leg, you have a tensioning handle, visible in the picture below. This is a unique Helinox tension system that provides a strong support and quick and easy setup.
So when you connect the two side poles, you slide them into the side sleeves in the fabric and your sleeping platform is ready. Now you add support bars one by one. This all is done literally in a couple of minutes.
The cot comes with a nice carry sack, so it is easy to attach it to your backpack, to store at home and to transport in the car or on the motorbike. You will find some reviews where they call it Motorcycle Camping Bed, obviously it is popular in these communities.
Sleeping on the ground can never be as pleasant as sleeping on such a cot, regardless of how good your sleeping pad is. A cot saves you from rocks, from uneven ground, from crawling creatures, and from the usual dampness which affects the insulation properties of your sleeping bag. As you realize from the specifications below, you have 15 cm of space between you and the cold ground or snow.
As you realize from the specifications below, you have 15 cm of space between you and the cold ground or snow. This is good to know because you lose around 55 times more warmth to the rocky surface (if you sleep on the ground) than to the air under you (if you sleep on a cot). So you realize, you need far less insulation with a cot. See more about it here.
See this nice video about the previous version of this cot, the setup is practically the same with the new model:
