This ALPS Mountaineering Escape Chair review is about a very comfortable folding camping chair with armrests, headrest, and footrest.

Key features

  • Adjustable armrests.
  • Headrest.
  • Adjustable footrest.
  • Cup holder.
  • Carry bag.
  • Very good price.

What this is about

The ALPS Mountaineering Escape offers great support everywhere, for the feet, arms, and the head. This is a folding chair and all these elements fit into its carry bag which is (L x D) 41 x 8 inches (104 x 20 cm).

The armrests are soft and adjustable, and one of them comes with an integrated cup holder, see the picture.

The footrest is a fabric platform supported by two crossed poles and kept in place with two straps with buckles. It is also adjustable and removable.

The back is very high, see the picture below, so the chair offers a very good headrest as well. So I have included it in my list of chairs with headrest.

Note that there is no padding, this is all a breathable fabric. I have seen people asking if it is a reclining chair, so the answer is no. When/if you remove the footrest, you can use the chair at a table as an ordinary camping chair.

Who is it for

Capacity-wise, this chair is quite modest with its 225 lb (102 kg) weight capacity. So this is not the best option if you are very heavy. In this case please check my list of chairs for heavy people.

Weight-wise, this is a typical chair for such a type, with a weight of 10 lb (4.5 kg). So you would not want to carry it long distances. But this is possible because it comes with a carry bag. For transportation, you clearly need a car.

Size-wise, the dimensions are very good and the back is long enough for a good headrest. It is designed to be used for relaxing so the seat is quite low, it is at (front/back) 17/14 inches (43/36 cm) above the ground. With the footrest added, it may not be so easy to get in and out.

Materials

The Escape has a sturdy powder-coated steel frame and all poles are crossed so you have several X-shape profiles typical for folding chairs. The fabric is a forest-green 600D polyester.

I have seen some people confused about the footrest, and some users were not aware of the fact that you can remove the footrest. So just unclip the two buckles and pull the two footrest poles from two nuts that are at the front feet.

  1. We have 6 ALPS Mountaneers. The footrests canvas is torn in many of them. Do they sell replacement parts?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Julie, I do not have this information, it would be necessary to get in touch with them directly and ask.
