OUTAD Camping Tent Cot is an incredibly versatile portable sleeping system with tent and cot together. It can be used in several variants and for many outdoor activities.
- Ultra-lightweight & backpack-portable.
- Multifunctional: cot, tent-cot, fast-fly tent-cot.
- Two doors.
- Easy setup.
- Freestanding system.
- Two vestibules.
- Very versatile.
What is in the name
This Camping Tent Cot should not be mixed with the other model from the same brand, presented in my another review. The bed size is the same, but the tent height is different.
Most importantly, the legs in the two cots are completely different systems. The legs in the cot presented here are far easier to set up.
What type is this
The Outad Camping Tent Cot is a collapsible tool, and this implies that it needs assembly. So this is both good and bad.
The good is that it collapses and packs to a really small size. The bad is that you have to assemble it every time. But assembly here is far easier than in some other tents cots, including the one from the same brand mentioned above.
This is also a three-in-one system, which means its elements can be used in several variants, see more below.
Freestanding tent cot
This is also a freestanding tent-cot of a particular type. You have a single main pole, and the structure becomes freestanding when you a) put the pole’s ends in the two grommets on the two narrow sides of the cot, and b) when you attach the inner tent to the pole. The tension in the fabric created in such a way is what keeps the tent standing.
Who is it for
I use the term ‘camping’ in the name just to distinguish it from the mentioned other model from the same brand. But with the total weight of 2600 g (5.73 lb) and the packed size of 22 x 5.9 inches (56 x 15 cm), this is a backpack-portable system.
So it is suitable for hikers, climbers, and mountaineers, perhaps even for a backpacker who has a problem with sleeping on the ground. It can be used also by cyclists, motorbikers, kayakers, and you name it. This is a really versatile outdoor tool and a tool for home use. But see more below.
Various variants & versatility
Here you have a 3-in-i system, and by this I mean the following:
- You can use it as the tent-cot, i.e., the full package.
- But you can unzip the inner tent and use only the cot just like any other collapsible cot. See how it looks alone in the picture below.
- You can use the fly with poles, and the cot, in a particular fast-fly combination. This terminology is from standard tents where the fly and the footprint are used only. But here, instead of a footprint, you have the cot which serves as the base for the pole. Then you put the fly above and stake it to the ground. So you sleep off the ground on the cot, and you are protected by the fly.
So you realize how versatile this tool is. Use the cot alone at home if you have a sudden guest, or if you kids have a sleepover. The same is if you camp with your family or friends in a bigger tent; use the cot alone in such a big tent, as a camping bed. On the other hand, for outdoor use, if the weight is critical, use the fast-fly variant and sleep comfortably off the ground.
What is included
The package includes the following:
- The fly.
- The cot with the inner tent.
- Two poles.
- Carry bag, shown in the picture.
Construction and setup
This system is a double-layer type, which means that you have an inner tent attached to the cot by a peripheral zipper, and you also have a fly.
The fly: This is a full-coverage waterproof structure, which means it goes completely to the ground. It also creates two large vestibules on both longer sides. So you have plenty of covered space for the storage of gear. Note also that the fly is with a vent, so the ventilation should be good here.
They have included stakes, so the fly can be fixed to the ground and secured against the wind. You will certainly do this in the mentioned fast-fly variant.
The poles: You have one main pole, but they have added also a short ridge pole and you have what looks like the so-called intersection hub in ordinary tents. You can see the structure below.
This short pole creates extra tension in the inner tent body, and it raises the sides where the doors are located, so the walls become vertical, see the picture. This improves livability in this tent, and you have plenty of volume inside.
The poles create enough headroom, the peak height is 105 cm (42 in). So you can seat freely inside.
The inner tent: The main body is 15D nylon double-sided silicone and 20D nylon yarn. On the two longer sides you have two mesh zippered doors. The tent itself is zipped to the cot, so the whole structure is completely closed and you are definitely protected from insects.
The cot: This is a very long structure, but quite narrow. Its capacity is impressive 440 lb (200 kg). It is with 4 legs, which are in fact bars, and they are equipped with plastic feet. So if you use the cot on its own in some big tent or at home, you will have no issues with the floor; this is a floor-friendly design.
Attaching the legs is easy, their elements are shock-corded so they are always kept together and you cannot lose parts. So you attach the legs one by one, no extra tool is needed and no force. All is done in a couple of minutes, together with the two shock-corded bed tubes which you put in the side sleeves.
Note that there are no end bars here, so the full length is the useful length. There are no bars directly underneath the bed deck, see the picture above, so you can be sure that there are no pressure spots when you sleep.
The cot is 15 cm above the ground and the legs-bars are such that they will not sink much regardless of the type of the ground. So you can put it on any surface, literally.
