Who is it for

First of all see its weight, 35.2 lb (16 kg), bear this in mind if you plan to buy one. This cot is made heavy and strong for reason. It is obviously for any weight but it supports weight up to 600 lb (272 kg) so very heavy people will love to have this cot at hand.

The Coleman Big-N-Tall Cot packs nicely in its handy carry bag.
The Coleman Big-N-Tall Cot packs nicely in its handy carry bag.

On the other hand, the Big-N-Tall Cot is also very long, no less than 84 inches (213 cm), so if you are a tall person, up to 6 ft. 8 in. or so, you know what you need.

The cot packs nicely to a relatively small size, 43.3 x 11 x 5.5 inches (110 x 28 x 13 cm), so it will fit easily in a car trunk, and storing it in a closet at home is also not a problem.

So this is a great tool to be used by strong people at places with car access, and you can use it in many situations, here to mention just a few:

  • regular camping places,
  • trailhead hotels,
  • for hunting,
  • for fishing,
  • as a spare bed for sudden guests at home.

If you plan to use it in cold environment, you will need an insulated pad, many are available on the market and you can see a top-notch collection here.

Construction and style

Everything on this Coleman Company Big-N-Tall Cot is strong and rugged, designed after a military-style cot. So you have a classic X-shape steel frame, see the pictures, with sidebars and end bars introduced for extra stability and support.

The bed canvas is again extra strong, the 6 legs are with oversized strong caps so it will not sink easily in a soft ground, and it will not damage the tent floor. This cot is built to last and you will use it for many years.

Everything folds up easily in the wheeled carry bag which is really nicely designed, with a great carry handle, wheels, and zipper, see the picture above. You need no extra tools to set the cot up or to take it down.

Fitting in the tent

The Coleman Big-N-Tall Cot is obviously very long, 84 inches (213 cm), so it will not fit in just every tent, but you will be able to use it in most of the 2-person tents. Though it is high as well, 16.5 in (42 cm) so bear this in mind. Normal two-person tents are usually around 110 cm high at the peak, so this should be fine.

My favorite choice for such cots are these very new tents that appeared on the market in 2017, the Kelty Mirada tent and the Camp Cabin from the same brand.

One thing that I love to stress is the fact that you have a huge space and volume under such a cot to store all your gear, and even to make a bed for your dog. So the rest of the tent is then a free space. Now, compare this with an ordinary pad used on the floor in a tent.

You will notice the huge feet in this cot, so this is definitely good for the floor of the tent, and also if you use it at home. There should be no damage on the floor regardless of the weight of the user.

  1. Nice review. I just purchased this Coleman Big n Tall cot, but have not yet used it. As a 6′ 200lb man, I needed the XL size and didn’t trust most of the other cots on the market due to poor reviews. I got a great sale price at the Coleman outlet store in Castle Rock, CO, so cost wasn’t an issue. The weight is my biggest concern. I don’t know where Jovo got the weight specs from, but I just weighed mine with a bathroom scale. With the roller carrying case, the weight is…get ready for it…50 lbs! This is a long way from the 35 lbs mentioned in this review. My Honda generator is lighter and easier to carry than this cot! This thing is a beast and is difficult to lift as you can’t get a grip on the lower end near the wheels. I added an external cinch strap near the wheels of the carrying case and that helps a lot to grip and lift it around. No doubt, this thing is sturdy and built to last, but a child or average woman would not be able to lift this thing into a vehicle without adding a strap like I did. Just say’n!

    1. Many thanks Tim, I know it is very heavy, this could be a typo. Do not have it at hand right now, shall check and correct the numbers if necessary. Much appreciated and grateful. All the best.
