What this is about
This Crua Hybrid Hammock Tent is built to be used both as a hammock tent (the top picture above) and as a ground tent, the picture below. In both cases you have a full protection from the elements and from insects of any kind.
Note that this is not the only example of such a hybrid design from this brand. Namely, their Crua AER Maxx roof top tent can also be used as a ground tent.
But for a hammock tent, the design is completely unique. As of the moment of writing this text, there is nothing similar on the market.
This is a versatile shelter, and some available accessory elements make it even more versatile, more about this below.
When used as a hammock, it looks like in the pictures below. Observe that they have added spreader poles at both ends, one is visible in the picture:
Overview of features
The Crua Hybrid Hammock Tent is a tunnel-shaped structure supported by two loop poles, see the pictures. When used on the ground, it must be staked on the front and on the rear side, so it is not freestanding.
But you have a fully enclosed canopy which is largely mesh. Note that there are two side doors, they are very long and you can unzip them and rolled up as in the picture, so you can access the shelter from any side.
These doors are matched with two side zippered flaps on the fly, see the picture.
When used on the ground, you can access it even from the front narrow side because it is fully zippered, though this is not practical because this is a small opening and you also have a guy line on your way.
So this opening is best used as an access point to the small vestibule created by the fly, it is on the left in the picture below.
Crua Twin Hybrid set up
The meaning of this is that you can zip two tents together for the ground use. You have zippers added on both sides so this can be easily done. The picture below shows how they look when zipped together.
You can order an extra tent at any time and use in the way described, but they offer this option as a bundle under the name Crua Twin Hybrid. In this case you pay less than when you buy two tents separately.
Below you can see how this setup looks with the fly on and when the two vestibules are partly open. Note that in such a configuration you have small window for views on the front side of inner tent.
Materials
This is a synthetic tents, so you have a highly waterproof polyester fly with a 5000 mm waterproof rating.
They have added a reflective aluminum lining to the inside of the flysheet boosting its insulator capacity. They claim this keeps warmth in when the weather is harsh and it also blocks excess heat when temperatures soar.
The floor seems to be a different material but they did not mention it anywhere. The mesh is a fine material that will stop even the smallest insects out.
The loop poles and spreader poles are all lightweight aluminum. Note that you do not use the spreader poles when in the ground, so just to know if you plan to carry it on the trail, this will reduce the weight.

Elements in the package
You have the following stuff included:
- Hybrid Hammock Tent. This includes a mesh canopy and a floor.
- Detachable rain fly.
- A stuff sack.
- Spreader bars.
- Poles.
- Hammock tree straps.
- Stakes and guy lines.
Ventilation
Regarding ventilation, I would say that you have everything in place here. A mesh canopy is above, see the picture, and you have mesh zippered doors on the sides.
There are also two mesh areas at the feet and head sides of the tent. The latter doubles as a small window when the vestibule is open.
The fly itself has two vents, one on each end, so they match those on the inner tent. This all, combined with the air flow from the ground, allows for plenty of air circulation regardless of how you use this shelter.
About ventilation you can see more here:
Who is this Crua Hybrid Hammock Tent for
Regarding the area, obviously this Crua Hybrid is a solo hammock and ground tent, and you have an area of around 20 ft² (1.8 m²). When used on the ground, you have the mentioned vestibule for storage of your gear.
The tent is long, you have 7.5 feet (226 cm) inner length inside, so this is long enough even for very tall users.
The peak height is 2.5 ft (74 cm). The side view below shows that even the feet area is quite high so this is all a usable space.
Regarding the weight, you will see the numbers below, this is not a very light shelter, so not something to carry on a long trail.
It is best suited for places where you do not have to carry it yourself. Their Crua Koala Set may be a better option for the trail.
The packed size is such that you can easily transport it even on a bicycle.
Regarding the load capacity, it is 260 lb (118 kg). This is far more than I myself need, but heavier users should bear this number in mind. The mentioned Crua Koala Set offers more.
Regarding best use, climate and seasons, this will depend on how you plan to use this versatile shelter. The picture below shows some dimensions to bear in mind when used as a hammock tent. They suggest 3.5-5.5 meters distance between trees.
The tent can be described as a true 3-season shelter, it is nicely ventilated, but it is also fully closable. However, if you need it for a cold environment, no worry, they have an inner insulating cocoon, you will see it below.
What I like
Based on all mentioned above:
- I like its dual use feature.
- The tent offers full protection.
- This is a high quality product.
- The brand is very reliable.
What I dislike
- The load capacity is a bit low.
- The price.

Final thoughts
In summary, this Crua Hybrid Hammock Tent is a completely unique product, but this is not surprising for this brand that frequently brings such innovative and top class products on the market.
This is a versatile outdoor shelter that can be used both on the ground and as a hammock tent. In both cases you have a full protection from the elements. With its accessory Crua Culla Solo, you can use this shelter in any seasons and any weather conditions. Fully recommended.
