The Freespirit Evolution rooftop tent is in the group of hard top pop up roof top tents, easy to use and functional. Read here about some of its great features.
The Freespirit Evolution Rooftop Tent has a unique combination of features that make it suitable for all seasons. The most important are the following:
- It is nicely ventilated.
- Unique construction with hinges on both sides.
- The walls are a 3-layer quilted construction that makes it suitable for any weather.
- It is functional and fits any car. It includes a flat roof, and channel slots on the sides to add racks on its roof, and to transport extra stuff. The roof also creates an awning.
- It comes with integrated LED.
Below I describe this in more details.
First thing first, about the name
The brand behind this product is the Freespirit Recreation or you will see also GoFSR used as its name. This may make things a bit confusing when you search for it because both versions of the brand name are used in the official name of the shelter.
On the other hand, you will also notice something strange with this outdoor items group in general. In some sources you will see the word Rooftop, and in some Roof Top used for such products. This is not all, the same holds for the words Hardshell and Hard Shell that are used by various sources.
But there is more. On the brand’s site, they use the phrase Evolution Series Rooftop Tent, and this applies to two of their products that differ only in the width. So you have:
- Freespirit Evolution rooftop tent Twin version 49 inches (124 cm) wide. They claim it is for 1-2 people.
- Freespirit Evolution rooftop tent Full version 55 inches (140 cm) wide. In fact, they write it is for 2-3 people, but I would this makes no much sense, this is for two people only. The picture below shows what they think by 3 people.
Note that they share the same features, and not all of them are presented here.
Exceptional combination of features
I shall not mention all the features of these shelters, this is not the point. The focus here is on several features that make this roof top shelter quite unique and special.
Ventilation
There are several aspects to mention here, all relevant for ventilation.
- Windows with mesh are on three sides, and a large panoramic mesh is on the door as well.
- This is a hard-top roof top shelter but it is bottomless, so it is not completely hard shell type. You have aluminum slates instead so there can be no moisture accumulation underneath the mattress. I have seen people asking if this makes it cold, so no worry, the included mattress solves the issue of insulation. You can always add more.
- There are two wall vents on the front, visible in the picture above. This is not so frequent in such hard-top pop-up type roof top shelters.
- There is also a large vent on the roof. It is closable with Velcro tabs. So air and vapor can escape here and then find its way out to the sides under the hard shell top.
Hinges on both sides
You get the idea about the meaning of this from the picture below. It looks like two wedged or clam shell tents one on top of another. But this is indeed a pop-up structure with a completely horizontal hard top roof.
Three-layer walls
This is a structure with a strong external shell fabric and two more underneath it. The central layer is a polycotton fabric.
These three layers of fabric make it effectively an insulated tent. They are right when they claim it is suitable for all seasons.
Funtionality
• The roof is completely flat, the picture below, and you can have crossbars attached because of the channels on the sides. This means that your bulkiest stuff can be transported on the top if this roof box. But you can use it also to install solar panels.
• A part of its functionality is the fact that the roof overhangs on the front and this creates an awning, see the picture below. This makes the door covered and partly protected, so you can keep it with mesh even when it rains and there is no side wind.
• One additional premium feature that adds to its functionality are zippers even on the mesh of the windows. Typically you have zippers only on panels in such hard shell roof top tents.
Fits on any vehicle
This is a part of its functionality. The picture below shows the types of vehicles where you can use this Freespirit Evolution rooftop tent, I think it tells all.
Integrated LED
This is a feature added above the rear window so no need to think about light here. There are conveniently positioned storage elements up in the corners where you can keep the power source. See how it looks:

It is surprising that, as of the moment of writing the text, this roof top tent is not available at big sellers. But you can find it at Overland Junction and also at the brand’s GoFSR site.
